Learning Outcomes

• By the end of the programme, learners will be able to: • demonstrate critical and analytical skills in the interpretation and evaluation of literary texts; • demonstrate sound knowledge of the terminology used in the analysis of literature and film, and ways it can be used; • recognize the structures and techniques used in various forms of literature and film; • discover cutting-edge approaches to cinematic and literary aesthetics, adaptation, and relationships between different media, reception contexts, ethics, and interfaces between theory and practice; • identify key concepts, iconic authors and works, important historical or cultural events, and most applicable literary theories to a variety of texts; • explore the relationship between literature and film in an exceptionally broad array of contemporary and historical contexts, and from a variety of different perspectives; • examine some of the major global political questions of the 21st century; • analyze literary works as reflective of the cultural and socio-economic values of their time; • analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded or live production of a play or recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how each version interprets the source text; • analyze literary works and movies about concepts of cultural dislocation, transnational life patterns, and identities across continents and cultures; • evaluate a filmmaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, assessing the stance, premises, links among ideas, word choice, points of emphasis, and tone used; • evaluate the development of film and the novel; • integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media in order to make informed decisions and solve problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any discrepancies among the data; and • employ the skills necessary to think critically and respond appropriately in both written and oral forms to a variety of fictional texts.
