This course includes applying translation concepts more proficiently, developing awareness of the lexicon used in translating selected types of texts, further enhancing students’ skill to render longer, more complex structures from/to English/Arabic, applying the inter-sentence and inter-paragraph coordinators, dealing with culturally bound expressions and idioms, and translating guided texts against time pressure. Intellectual skills developed are understanding different approaches to translation, distinguishing between different lexical choices, recognizing the difference between Arabic and English structure, identifying stylistic changes occurring in translation, deciding on suitable solutions for cultural and issues in translation, and handling translation difficulties and problems. Professional and practical skills emphasized in this course are identifying and comparing between different approaches to translation, tracing the chronological development of translation strategies, defining and comparing features of source and target language, constructing a lexicon on their own that includes the glossary that they have been using, applying information to differentiate between English / Arabic texts, and using stylistic features specific to English/ Arabic. General and transferable skills that students will acquire are discriminating between source and target language in terms of lexical and syntactic difficulties, using idioms in the source and target language, stressing the importance of the cultural paradigm, demonstrating their use of the accurate structures in translating English-Arabic texts and vice versa, and applying all learned principles to improve their translation process.
