Description

1. Knowledge and Understanding 1.1 Understand different approaches to translation. 1.2 Distinguish between different equivalents of lexical items in the target language. 1.3 Recognize differences between Arabic and English structure. 1.4 Identify stylistic changes occurring in translation. 1.5 Understand the importance of the use of technology in translation. 2. Intellectual Skills 2.1 Integrate theoretical concepts in their translation. 2.2 Develop their awareness of the lexicon used in translating selected types of texts 2.3 Render longer, more complex structures from/to English/Arabic 2.4 Determine solutions for cultural issues in translation (culturally bound expressions and idioms). 2.5 Use phraseology and lexicon characterizing certain specified fields. 3. Professional and Practical skills 3.1 Construct a lexicon on their own that includes the glossary that they have been using. 3.2 Use stylistic features specific to English/ Arabic 3.3 Translate guided texts against time pressure. 4. General and Transferable skills 4.1 Demonstrate effective written and oral communication in both source and target languages, ensuring clarity and cultural appropriateness. 4.2 Apply all learned principles to improve their translation process.

Objectives

  • This course is aimed at teaching students to translate different types of longer more sophisticated texts from Arabic into English and vice versa. Students will also be further trained on how to take into account the linguistic, inter-lingual and intercultural differences between Arabic and English. The course throws light on the concept of multimodality and the interplay between verbal and non-verbal semiotics in translation. It introduces students to the issues related to gender, language and translation. It also aims to improve students’ awareness and understanding of gender as an essential aspect of social, historical and cultural formation, and on this basis explore the development and the limitations of feminist translation theory.
