On the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: State aspects of diversity of modern American poets. Classify different poetic tastes and genres. Recite poetry with an appreciative eye. Point the emotional state of the persona. Identify the poets' social, historical and political background. Explore prominent themes and trends that the poet tackles in his poetry. Examine different characteristics, aesthetic qualities, poetic conventions, and styles of American poets. State the role of a poet in society enacting his selfhood. Explore the history and characteristics of American poetry and famous American poets of the 19th and 20th centuries. Analyze poems figuratively and critically. Improve their analytical writing skills through practice. Discuss major themes. Compare between poets' styles and contribution to American Poetry. Study a poet of their choice, stating the major themes, style, and contribution. Give PowerPoint presentations, analyzing poems of their choice. Analyze the influence of movements on the poets' style and poetry autonomously. Provide an appreciation to poems in writing.

Objectives

  • The course aims to provide a wide canvas of American Poetry, as it is a wide-ranging and not all-inclusive course. It will assess the cultural constructs that frame 20th c. American poetry. It is a study of an extended period in the history of American poetry at some depth with selection of salient poets’ works.
