By the end of the course, students should be able to: Identify the cultural and historical backgrounds of twentieth century societies. Identify the various themes, techniques, and styles of writing related to the twentieth century novel. Explain how the novels reflect the cultural and social movements of the time. Recognize the writing style of each novelist in the course. Evaluate and critique the use of advanced literary elements, stylistic devices and techniques used in modern and postmodern novels. Outline the major characteristics of the main characters in the novels under study Demonstrate an ability to engage in research and advanced literary analysis. Demonstrate how social and political background impact the development of characters in each novel. Trace the development of themes tackled in the novels under study. Analyse the major literary techniques implemented in each novel. Write critical essays on the topics and issues discussed in class. Employ the acquired analytical and critical skills to the novels under study. Prepare oral presentations tackling cultural and historical background in addition to the development of themes and characters. Develop their written and oral communication skills. Express the ability to write literary appreciation of literary texts. Employ the acquired analytical skills in academic literary discussions.

Objectives

  • This course builds on the previous course (Novel 1) and introduces the students to the modern novel. The various elements of the modern novel as well as the historical and cultural backgrounds are dealt with in detail. Through an in-depth study of four novels, students will be acquainted with the various themes, techniques, styles and language of the 20th century novel.
