On completion of this course, students will be able to: Distinguish between documentary films and other types of films Identify the 7 modes of documentary films. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the different modes of documentary films List the key features of each mode of documentary films. Develop a variety of research, academic, theoretical and technical skills Order the elements of the mise-en-scene according to the selected mode. Express a given idea from different perspectives Relate ideas in actual written scripts to their visual representation. Analyze the elements that provide the framework of a documentary. Classify Examine documentary films based on their modes Compare and contrast the different modes of documentaries Give examples for each mode Analyze documentary films and trace their storylines. Develop theoretical skills during knowledge through research. Develop critical thinking and research skills. Outline ideas and illustrate them through scripts. Categorize documentary films Identify the different modes of documentary films Recognize the key features of each mode of documentary movies Demonstrate the ability to implement shooting, filming and editing techniques. Apply the different techniques learnt while shooting Practice analyzing documentary films Rewrite scripts based on a selected mode of documentary. Produce short documentary films. Objectives

• This course presents an introductory historical survey of the documentary, from the silent era to the digital age. Topics addressed include how to define non-fiction cinema and documentary and identify the seven modes of documentary filmmaking. The course is designed to give the students introduction to the practical considerations of making a film with the three process of Pre-Production, production and post production. It exposes the students to various types of documentary styles and subject matter so that they can be able to produce a 3 – 5 minute film of their choice.
