Documentary Translation

Description

This course offers an intensive practice in translating into Arabic/English any kind of documentary text, such as technical, UN, legal, religious or contractual material. Special emphasis is placed on keeping both the form and content; translating word for word in cases where syntactic relations give explicit semantic relations.

Objectives

• By the end of this course, students should be able to:  Identify the specific translation register required by the SL text at hand.  Translate the SL text using the specific register correctly.  Identify the language-specific features of Arabic and English and translate accordingly.  Hone their skills to recognize certain grammatical features such as sentence length, subordination, coordination.  Use the internet to seek target language texts similar to the source language text at hand.  Use new vocabulary items in specific fields easily and accurately.
