By the end of the course, students should be able to: Identify the cultural and historical backgrounds of the texts read. Discuss gender issues, postcolonialism and anti-Semitism. Recognize the various prominent writers of each topic. Identify the various themes, techniques and styles of writing related to the texts read. Explain how the texts reflect the cultural and social movements of the time. Identify key literary elements from different texts. Assess the meaning and significance of events. Employ analytical and evaluative thinking. Conclude and formulate judgements based on evidence. Illustrate how to deal with multi-disciplinary subjects. Engage in group discussions. Demonstrate how they become more culturally sensitive. Examine literary texts in diverse cultural and historical contexts Discuss a wide range of themes Analyze the plot and the characters Give oral presentations Analyze and write critical essays on a variety of literary texts. Apply all learned critical devices to the texts under study. Develop critical thinking and research skills. Apply close reading techniques.

Objectives

  • This course introduces the students to the various schools of modern literature as well as the most famous literary movements that prevailed in the West and in the Arab world through the beginning of the twentieth century till its end. General comparisons are going to be made between the works of literature and the writers as well as specific comparisons between cultures, themes and techniques.
