1. Knowledge and Understanding 1. Intellectual Skills On completion of this course, students will be able to: 1.1. Describe the main theories of the origin and development of human language. 1.2. Identify various word formation processes. 1.3. Distinguish between the different types of morphemes and illustrate each type. 1.4. Analyze English sentences using tree diagrams and phrase structure rules. 1.5. Practice analyzing the main constituents of a sentence. 1.6. Analyze a given text or conversation based on pragmatic elements. 3.6. Analyze language variations due to regional & social factors. 4. General and Transferable skills 4.1. Use the skills learned in this course to describe languages of the world. 4.2. Suggest language planning scenarios for given linguistic situations. 4.3. Evaluate various linguistic situations.

Objectives

  • This course introduces students to the scientific study of human language, using examples from a variety of world languages. The course provides students with an overview of the fundamentals of linguistics, with a focus on the nature of language and introduction to sound system, word formation, sentence structure, and meaning. The course also introduces the concepts of pragmatics, discourse analysis, as well as regional and social language variation and language planning. By the end of this course, students should be able to use accepted linguistic terminology when describing languages.
