Appreciate the value and uniqueness in language. Understand the purpose of linguistic study, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Identify patterns and systems in language and develop tools of analysis with which to examine language. Read the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and use it in language learning situations and descriptions. Describe the location of sound production in the vocal tract. Comprehend word structure and describe how words are formed. Comprehend sentence structure and describe how words combine to make sentences. Comprehend grammatical systems and describe how language conveys meaning. Use the skills learned in this course to describe languages of the world.

Objectives

  • This course introduces students to the scientific study of human language, using examples from a variety of languages of the world. This course provides students with an overview of the fundamentals of language and linguistics, with a focus on the nature of language, an introduction to sound systems, word formation and structures, sentence structure, meaning, and an overview of language revitalization and language learning if time permits. By the end of this course, students should be able to use accepted linguistic terminology when describing languages.
