By the end of this course, students should be able to: Understand the difference between Translation and Interpreting. Identify different modes of Interpreting. Recognize different strategies of Simultaneous Interpreting. Interpret simultaneously with good, natural voice quality. Understand the golden rules of Interpreting. Produce grammatical, logical and complete sentences. Summarize long speeches and interpret them into their major ideas. Prepare the related terminology before initiating the interpretation process. Develop good intonation and articulation. Implement different strategies of Interpreting Choose the most suitable way to deal with difficulties with regards to length and accent. Use anticipation strategy with regards to understanding longer chunks. Produce short, comprehensible segments. Avoid long pauses, stammering and stuttering. Seek boothmate’s help in class, mimicking real situations. Respond to assessment and feedback. Increase their confidence and overcome “booth fright."

Objectives

  • This course aims to acquaint students with the practical skills of simultaneous interpreting from Arabic into English and vice versa. Students will receive intensive training in the skills involved in simultaneous interpreting, inter alia, speech perception, mnemonics, speech production, coping with different accents and making inferences when unsure. The training methodology involves a progressive and reasoned gradation in the difficulty and content of the audio text.
