Description
Based on the Egyptian flora and other florae of wild and cultivated medicinal plants that are used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries in the global & Egyptian market, the course introduces students to some botanical drugs of fruits, subterreans, herbs, unorganized drugs of marine and animal origin. During the lectures and practical sessions, students learn to identify examples of these drugs in their entire and powdered forms. Student will learn about the major constituents, folk uses, clinically proven uses, benefits, precautions of those medicinal plants and possible herbal-drug interactions of selected examples of these drugs.

Objectives
- Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1.1 – Recall some important medicinal drugs of natural origin, regarding their history, cultivation and collection, as well as diagnostic characters, active constituents and medicinal uses and the misuse of some herbs.
1.2- Recognize various products of natural origin used by the public in the self- treatment of diseases, regarding their safety and efficacy
Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
2.1- Differentiate between selected examples of the medicinal drugs
morphologically, microscopically and chemically.
2.2- Distinguish herbal remedies and multi-herbal mixtures, their safety,
shortcomings, difficulties, and to categorize the methods of their identification
as crude drugs and how to test for possible adulterants.
Domain (3): Pharmaceutical Care
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
3.1- Identify medicinal drugs of natural origin and judge their purity. Examine the new medicinal drugs of plant origin on scientific basis depending on all gained information (theoretical and practical).
3.2- Communicate to the public the dangerous effects of the misuse of herbs
Domain (4): Personal Practice
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
4.1- Communicate and work in groups, through attending scientific discussions held in the labs. Practice self-learning through the access to the web and central libraries.
4.2- Participate in direct patient care
