Description

The course covers drugs intended for bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, and drug-induced respiratory problems, in addition to neurological disorders including (epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease … etc.). Drugs are discussed relevant to their possible structure – activity relationships, contraindications, prodrug and bioactivation concepts, if any, and their possible metabolism and elimination.

Objectives

• Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge By the end of the course the student should be able to: 1.1 Recognize the chemical structure, pharmacophore moieties and structure activity relationships in each class of the drugs used for respiratory system and neurological disorders. 1.2 Explain different physicochemical properties based on chemical structure of the respiratory system and CNS acting drugs 1.3 Evaluate the effect of different pharmacokinetic properties on the drug effectiveness and safety in different clinical settings. 1.4 Discuss the process of drug design and, synthesis in certain classes of the studied drugs. Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 2.1 Design new chemical entities of drugs with improved biological activity based chemical structure of some studied drugs. Domain (3): Pharmaceutical Care At the end of the course the student should be able to: 3.1 Integrate the pharmacological properties of antimicrobial drugs including mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, dosage, contra-indications, adverse drug reactions and drug interactions. Domain (4): Personal Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 4.1 Demonstrate responsibility for team performance and peer evaluation of other team members, and express time management skills. 4.2 Retrieve and critically analyze information, identify and solve problems, and work autonomously and effectively in a team. 4.3 Use new technologies and media to demonstrate effective presentation skills. 4.4 Practice independent learning needed for continuous professional development.
