Description

The biotechnology subject is crucial for pharmacy students. It mainly aims to provide sufficient foundation for the student on how to learn the concept of the biotechnology, its main components, optimization of fermentation, bioconversion biodegradation and bioremediation – gene therapy and genetic engineering. It simply puts the student on the track of the hot topic and the coming near future of the pharmaceutical industries.

  • Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge By the end of the course the student should be able to: 1.1 Outline the concept and main components of biotechnology. 1.2 Explain fermentation, genetic engineering, gene therapy, and their application. 1.3 Identify important examples of biopharmaceuticals that have medical contributions. Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 2.1 Apply safe handling and optimization of biotechnological processes. 2.2. Practice adherence to ethical and legal guidelines in genetic engineering and biotechnological applications. Domain (3): Pharmaceutical Care At the end of the course the student should be able to: 3.1 Apply biotechnological knowledge in pharmaceutical settings. 3.2 Relate the implications of biotechnology on patient care and treatment. Domain (4): Personal Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 4.1 Retrieve and critically analyze information, identify and solve problems, and work autonomously and effectively in a team. 4.2 Demonstrate responsibility for team performance and peer evaluation of other team members, and express communication and time management skills. 4.3 Practice independent/self learning needed for continuous professional development.
