Description
The course is tailored to assist the students to gain the knowledge about drugs used to manage main diseases affecting the cardiovascular system, dyslipidemias, hypertension, coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, dysrhythmias, thromboembolic disorders, and stroke. The drugs are discussed relevant to their possible structure – activity relationships, contraindications, prodrug and bioactivation concepts, if any, their possible metabolism and elimination.

Objectives
- Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge
By the end of the course the student should be able to:
1.1 Identify the mechanism of action and nomenclature of some drugs intended for cardiovascular and nephrological disorders.
1.2 Integrate the general factors affecting the pharmacokinetic properties of these drugs.
1.3 Demonstrate the synthesis and metabolism of selected drugs.
Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
2.1. Design structural changes for optimized physicochemical properties of certain drugs to treat some diseases.
2.2 Identify SAR of certain drugs.
2.3 Fulfil the requirements of the regulatory framework to authorize a medicinal product including quality, safety, and efficacy requirements.
Domain (3): Pharmaceutical Care
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
3.1 Apply standard laboratory skills and techniques required for quality control analysis of different market drugs.
3.2 Relate drug design software and its applications to design new drug candidates.
Domain (4): Personal Practice
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
4.1 Demonstrate responsibility for team performance and peer evaluation of other team members, and express time management skills.
4.2 Retrieve and critically analyze information, identify and solve problems, and work autonomously and effectively in a team.
4.3 Use new technologies and media to demonstrate effective presentation skills.
4.4 Practice independent learning needed for continuous professional development.
