Phytochemistry II (2 hrs Lecture+1 hr Practical)

  • College of Pharmacy |

Description

The course aims to enable students to demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts of biosynthesis, chemistry and bioactivities of alkaloids, tannins, bitter principles and antioxidants as well as chromatographic techniques for their isolation and identification. The course emphasizes on drugs with valuable use in the Egyptian and worldwide markets, such as anti-cancer agents, drugs affecting CNS, drugs ameliorating liver diseases and anti-inflammatory agents. Clinical applications will be correlated with various clinical analyses. Finally, the course focuses on the structure activity relationships (SAR) of these natural products derived compounds and their pharmacophoric features. Principles of the technology of plant tissue culture and its applications will be also presented.

Objectives

  • Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge By the end of the course the student should be able to: 1.1. Describe the biosynthesis, physical and chemical properties and bioactivities of different phytochemical classes i.e. alkaloids, bitter principles and phenolics. 1.2. Explain the botanical occurrence, extraction, isolation, identification, therapeutic uses and mechanism of action of selected examples of different phytochemical classes. 1.3. Explain the principles of the technology of plant tissue culture and its applications in pharmaceutical sciences. Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice By the end of the course the student should be able to: 2.1. Apply appropriate methods for extraction, isolation, identification, and quantitative determination of different natural products. 2.2. Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of medicinally valuable alkaloids, bitter principles & tannins in herbal mixtures and/or their pharmaceutical preparations. 2.3.
