Description

Based on complementary medicine and Egyptian medicinal plants that can be used as natural extracts, bioactive raw materials and phytochemical standards to serve the pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food industries in Egypt. The course aims to gain the students the knowledge and experience that enable them to understand, describe and deal with biosynthesis, chemistry and pharmaceutical uses of volatile oils, resins and resin combinations, carbohydrates and glycosides of plant or animals as well as techniques for their isolation, identification and determination from their respective sources. Clinical applications will be correlated with various clinical analyses.

Objectives

  • Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge By the end of the course the student should be able to: 1.1. Enumerate the different groups of volatile oils, carbohydrates and glycosides. 1.2. Describe the biosynthesis of different volatile oils and glycosides. 1.3. Explain the botanical occurrence, extraction, isolation, identification, therapeutic uses and mechanism of action of different natural products. Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 2.1. Differentiate between the chemical structures and uses of different groups of volatile oils, carbohydrates, and glycosides. 2.2. Apply appropriate methods for extraction, isolation, purification and identification and qualitative determination of different groups of phytochemical classes. Domain (4): Personal Practice 4.1. Practice team work through group discussions.
