Description
Based on the Egyptian flora and other florae of wild and cultivated medicinal plants that are used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries in the global & Egyptian market.The course introduces students to some botanical drugs of leaves, flower, seeds, bark and wood origin. During the lectures and practical sessions, students learn to identify examples of these drugs in their entire and powdered forms. Student will learn about the major constituents, folk uses,clinically proven uses, benefits, precautions of those medicinal plants.possible herbal-drug interactions of selected examples of these drugs and to have an overview over their phytopharmaceuticals available on the market specially the Egyptian market.

Objectives
- Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge
By the end of the course the student should be able to:
1.1 Know and understand some important medicinal drugs of natural origin, regarding their history, diagnostic characters (organoleptic, macroscopic and microscopic), active constituents and medicinal uses (prophylactic and/or clinical).
1.2 Acquire health and pharmacy practices through studying theoretical background about the action (therapeutic uses, side effects, precautions, contraindications, toxicity, interactions, etc.), doses, dosage form, and the proper method of preparation of the selected drugs in addition to the misuse of some botanicals.
1.3 Gain intensive information about various products of the corresponding studied drugs used by the public as self-treatment of diseases, regarding their safety and efficacy.
Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
2.1 Develop skills in identifying medicinal drugs of natural origin and judge their purity as most of them are incorporated in pharmaceutical industry.
2.2 Correlate all the gained information (theoretical and practical) to examine the new medicinal drugs of plant origin on scientific basis.
2.3 Recognize and detect possible adulterants
Domain (3): Pharmaceutical Care
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
3.1 Deduce, check and estimate the hazards of the misuse of herb and effectively practice patient counseling when dispensing OTC and prescription products of natural origin to ensure safe and proper use of herbal medicines.
3.2 Participate in all aspects of pharmacy and direct patient care following ethical, legal and safety guidelines in all practice settings
Domain (4): Personal Practice
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
4.1 Communicate and work individually and in groups.
4.2 Continue professional development through self-learning and retrieve up-to-date information through the access to the web and central libraries.
4.3 Perform self-assessment to enhance professional and personal competencies
