Overall Course Objectives
On Completion of the course, students should satisfactory understand and be able to achieve their duties and responsibilities as Marine Pilots towards all parties involved in any Pilotage operation (The ship''s Master, the Harbor Master, the Berth Master, the tug Masters, the ship''s crew, the mooring gang, and the boat skippers, from the moment of receiving the task till having the job done
Knowledge and Understanding
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
• Understand and be able to explain the value of Bridge Teamwork, sharing the workload, and how to build good teamwork with ship''s crew on board, thus enhancing safety and efficiency.
• Realize the information to get before the operation, the checks to be done before and after boarding the ship, and what to be passed to the ship''s Master to end with a safe operation.
• Have good situational awareness and anticipate on what is coming next.
• Be able to handle unexpected and emergency situations and make decisions that are realistic and sensitive to constrains.
• Understand and be able to explain the value and practical use of the Operating Procedures specified by the port, using caution, safe strategies and keep options open as long as possible.

• When Pilotage to be compulsory.
• The exception of a compulsory Pilotage.
• The role of the Pilot and the responsibilities (the ship''s Master / the Pilot).
• Where the Pilot is full responsible.
• Pilot liability and regulations.
• If the ship is approaching the PBG (Pilot Boarding Ground).
• If the ship at anchor.
• If the ship at berth.
• What operations expected with the ship at each position mentioned above.
• What to do before boarding a ship going for berthing.
• Checks to be done from the Pilot boat.
• Responsibilities.
• The ship and her Master responsibilities.
• Requirements for embarkation and disembarkation of Pilot.
• Safe use of using Pilot ladder, accommodation ladder (gangway), and the combination.
• Checks required by the Pilot after boarding and while still on deck.
• Responsibilities while the Pilot still on deck.
• Who should accompany the Pilot on the safety checking tour on deck.
• Checks required at the bridge.
• What navigational equipments to be checked..
• If another operation at the same terminal.
• Berthing plan.
• Information to be passed by the Pilot to the bridge team about the transit to and from the berth.
• The fatigue.
• How to fight the fatigue.
