In 1972, The Marine Engineering program at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology and Maritime Transport was established, primarily to provide education and training for the shipping industry. This role was fulfilled through the provision of the Basic Engineering Studies degree and certificates of competency for marine engineers. In 1979 the Marine Engineering program was developed to offer the bachelor degree of engineering (B. Eng.) in Marine Engineering, plus Third Marine Engineer certificate.
The diversity and growth of engineering branches in the Academy led to the establishment of the College of Engineering and Technology in 1991. The department of Mechanical & Marine Engineering has become one of the major departments of the college and provided programs leading to either discipline. Due to the recognized difference between the two disciplines, it was decided to separate both programs and by the end of 2008 the Marine Engineering department was established under the hierarchy of the College of Engineering and Technology.
