Program Description

* Some Courses of M.Sc. in Renewable Energy and Environmental Engineering have been updated thanks to EACEA funding as part of the WESET project (www.weset-project.eu)

Overview

According to the annual report of the Egyptian National Renewable Energy report for 2008/2009, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy is striving for doubling the renewable energy share of energy production to 20% by the year 2020. No direct transition from conventional methods to renewable energy resources is anticipated due to social and economical factors. Moreover, new technologies evolving for emission abatement are also conceived and investigated. Thus fossil fuel combustion will continue to be the dominant share through the following two decades. Hence, this project responds to the current and pressing demands of the labor and energy sectors of having competent and well trained engineers in the fields of energy and environment.

The project aims mainly to establish of a new master program leading to an M.Sc. degree in the fields of energy and environmental management. This will support the labor and energy sectors of well qualified professional engineers in the renewable energy discipline. Moreover, among our target, the project will establish specially-tailored training programs for engineers working in this vital sector.

The master/training program can be subdivided into two major modules namely: Renewable Energy Resources and Environmental Management.

Program preparation and establishment

The program preparing and establishing is funded by the European Union (through A TEMPUS program which stands for Trans-European Mobility Scheme for University Studies). The project is called JAMILA which stands for Joint Master of Mediterranean Initiatives on Renewable and Sustainable .

The program is prepared in cooperation between three European universities (University of Cadiz in Spain, Northumbria University in England and Sapienza University of Rome which is the main coordinator in Italy) and three universities from Egypt (Ain Shames University, Alexandria University and Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport).

Many workshops have taken place in Egypt and Europe with the participation of all JAMILA partners to review the programs details and exchange experience taking into account the needs as well as the sustainability plan of each university and making use of the experience of the JAMILA project partners from the EU universities in this field. As a result each Egyptian University has designed a program based on the support of this TEMPUS project in the development of Human Resources and Equipment’s as follows:

  1. Faculty of Engineering in Ain Shames University has designed an MSc Program in New and Renewable Energy Engineering.
  2. Institute of Graduate Studies & Research in Alexandria University has designed an MSc program in Technologies and Materials for Renewable energy.
  3. The College of Engineering and Technology of Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Abu Kir Campus in Alexandria has designed an MSc program in Renewable Energy and Environmental Engineering (REEE).

Target Groups

According to earlier conducted survey, this master program will be targeting engineers from different inter discipline such as:
  • Energy Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • Construction and Building Engineering
  • Architectural Engineering and Environmental Design.

Program Detailed Structure

The proposed Master’s Program is developed following the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) with equivalence in the Egyptian Credit Hour System. Hence the proposed Master’s program is developed as an integrated program composed of:
  1. Courses representing 60 ECTS credits = 24 Egyptian Credit Hours
  2. MSc thesis representing 30 ECTS credits = 12 Egyptian Credit Hours.

The master program is subdivided into two major modules or specializations namely renewable energy resources and environmental management Studies:

The renewable energy resource module

It includes the studies of solar, wind, wave, and tidal as well as geothermal energy. This module includes also the study of pollutant reduction technologies applied to conventional power plants and different technologies for carbon capture and storage, so as to trigger the awareness of the international legislations/protocols concerning the environment and pollutant emissions.

The environmental management studies module

It focuses on the mechanical and biological treatment of solid waste as well as design of solid waste treatment plants. The module covers waste water treatment of urban areas and industrial processes drainage. Air quality control is also covered within this module where air pollutant measurements and sampling are focused as well as flue gas treatments.

The student can finish the program courses and Master Thesis in minimum period of four academic semesters during which he/she can register courses as follows:

  • In the first semester, he/she will study three courses from the offered modules. Such that after this term, each student will finish 9 Egyptian Credit Hours which is equivalent to 22.5 ECTS.
  • In the second semester, he/she will study three courses from the offered modules which are 3 CR each. Such that after this term, each student will finish 9 Egyptian Credit Hours which is equivalent to 22.5 ECTS.
  • In the third semester, he/she will study one course from the offered modules, in addition to Research thesis (Part 1) and Research thesis (Part 2), which are 3 CR each. Such that after this term, each student will finish 9 Egyptian Credit Hours which is equivalent to 22.5 ECTS.
  • In the fourth semester, he/she will study one course from the offered modules, which are 3 CR in addition to Master`s Research Thesis (Part 3) which are 6 CR each. Such that after this term, each student will finish 9 Egyptian Credit Hours which is equivalent to 22.5 ECTS.

After the first three semesters, each student from each sector (RE or EE) has to complete four fundamental core compulsory courses and three courses from his/her main major and one course from the other major, (i.e. if his/her main Major is RE, then he/she does three courses in RE and one course in EE, while if his/her main Major is EE, then he/she does three courses in EE and one course in RE).
