Knowledge and understanding. Exploring the history of journalism from print to the web from general perspective. Identifying basic news reporting and writing techniques in both print media and online news. Understanding all theoretical and practical concepts concerning covering news: five W’s and How, hard news vs soft news, news values, breaking news, news sources, online reporting. Recognizing ethical concerns involved in gathering reporting and writing news. Intellectual skills. Understanding basic reporting techniques, including conducting interviews and using different sources to gather information. Comparing the traditional journalistic process in reporting news with new developments related to the new digital era. Applying critical analytical skills to some ethical situations concerning reporting news. Evaluating the news stories content with regard to the general rules of newsworthiness. Professional and practical skills. Learning the required skills to generate beat stories. Being able to select the appropriate photos embedded in news stories. Developing critical skills regarding the news contents and structures. Learning to apply the criteria for news values judgment. Updating stories in a timely manner to reflect breaking news. Producing a prototype for a news content in an environment that simulates a modern professional newsroom. General and transferable skills. Acquiring sufficient writing skills, and the ability to convey information in a clear, concise and conversational manner Gathering content and understanding press pools. Communicate effectively. Proficiency in working in a team to explore the determinants of the news reporting process. Objectives

  • This course provides an introductory framework on journalism history and aims to introduce the essential techniques of news reporting and writing in both print and online news. Students will understand the foundations of gathering, selecting, and reporting news, in addition to knowing how newsrooms work, and what it takes to be a reporter. This course explores all theoretical and practical concepts concerning covering news. Moreover, students will acquire the skills needed for writing basic news stories, in addition to learning how to check facts using the internet, and to promote their work using traditional and digital media. Student will identify the ethical concerns involved in gathering reporting and writing news.
