Description

• Recognize cultural and historical backgrounds of the 20th century. • Explore various prominent modern, late modern and postmodern writers of the 20th century. • Study various themes, techniques and styles of writing related to the 20th century novel. • Read selected major English novels from the 20th century. • Examine how the novels reflected the cultural and social movements of the time. • Improve strategies and skills of reading and writing as well as critical thinking.

Objectives

  • This course builds on the previous course (Novel 1) and introduces the students to the modern novel. The various elements of the modern novel as well as the historical and cultural backgrounds are dealt with in detail. Through an in-depth study of four novels, students will be acquainted with the various themes, techniques, styles and language of the 20th century novel.
