By the end of this course, students should be able to: Distinguish the different genres of script writing and thence their translation Understand the different subtitling technical requirements and problems Recognise the general features of audio-visual material semiotics and the appropriate register for language transfer Distinguish the linguistic and cultural features of spoken discourse in ST and TT and their difference in both languages Recognize text reduction strategies Describe the role of camera movement, scene cuts & shot variations as unit of meaning making and their impact on translation Analyze the semiotic components of a movie Apply the subtitling parameters: technical parameters, linguistic parameters, and paralinguistic parameters. Solve translation problems in accordance with filmic semantics & discuss possible errors Evaluate the quality of revoicing in a given movie Use Netflix dubbing guidelines Apply the semiotic theory to AVT Create linguistically appropriate subtitles for a given movie using appropriate reduction strategies. Apply house styles in subtitling Produce dubbing projects appropriately Create linguistically appropriate revoicing for a given movie using appropriate revoicing strategies. Decode layered meaning in audiovisual texts via applying the semiotic theory work on a team to produce any given AVT project

Objectives

  • This course is aimed at introducing students into translating scripts, using the different script translation strategies with reference to the existing practices in the market. The course will cover the subtitling strategies on the technical, linguistic and cultural levels. Subtitling techniques such as condensation, transcription and transadaptation will be tackled. Students will also get acquainted with the influence of technological advances (subtitling software and the internet) on the subtitler's practice.
