Objectives
Through this course the researchers explore the styles and functions of furniture in the Western world, from ancient times to modern day. The course teaches the different furniture styles and interiors of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, 18th Century America, Neoclassicism, the Victorian era, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, modern, and post-modern, as well as contemporary.
Upon successful completion of the course, researcher will be able to assess why furniture matters. Furniture is both functional and decorative. The creation of a furniture piece captures the essence of the designer/fabricator and embodies the qualities and values of a particular moment in history. From highly functional pieces to uniquely creative art, furniture design is a complex and varied expression of materials and forms that is lived with on a daily basis. In addition, it will also be taught how to select furniture styles for a certain space by learning how to identify and assess furniture construction, form and materials to best suit that space.
