Balsa Bridge Competition
What is the balsa bridge competition?
It is a competition where Construction and Building Engineering students form teams to design and build a bridge model made from balsa wood and glue only to withstand a load of 10 kg. (For full design and build details see below)

When was the competition held?
The competition was held on the engineering day.
What was the judging criterion?
The winning team is the tem that achieves the highest design efficiency ratio. (Efficiency Ratio = Failure Load / Weight)
What are the awards and prizes?
4 bonus marks in a design course if you submit an acceptable bridge. (According to the rules below)
6 bonus marks in a design course if the bridge holds 10 kg + certificates.
8 bonus marks in a design course for second place + certificate for each member of the team.
10 bonus marks in a design course for first place + certificate for each member of the team.
What else will I get from the competition?
Practical design experience.
Applying concepts you studied in real life situation.
Participate in an event to promote the department.
Looks good on C.V.
When is the next competition?
The next competition will be held on the Engineering Day 2013.
More information shall be available next Fall semester (September 2012).

1st Place: Weight 114 gm, Failure Load 24 Kg
2nd Place: Weight 283 gm, Failure Load 43 Kg
3rd Place: Weight 237 gm, Failure Load 27 Kg
4th Place: Weight 223 gm, Failure Load 19 Kg
