History
In the middle of 1994, the executive board of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport recommended the establishment of a new study major in Construction Engineering and Management. The recommendation of the new undergraduate program, leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Construction and Building Engineering (CB) was based on a through survey of the engineering market demands in Egypt and the Middle East. The objective has been to provide a comprehensive and strong program that would complement the current civil engineering programs at the national universities in Egypt.
The CB program at AASTMT is formulated to stretch typical curriculum and course syllabi which provide basic design and research skills required in civil engineering to embrace technological advances in the industry; construction materials and quality control, methods & equipment of construction, inspection and repairs, urban design and environmental quality, project-level control and corporate-level management. In the United States Construction Engineering programs at some universities are emerging as independent engineering majors, as is the case at Purdue University or as a major in Civil Engineering such as at the University of California, Berkeley.
The overall program at AASTMT has been designed to conform to the requirements of the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt and the American Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
