In line with the directives of His Excellency Professor Dr. Ismail Abd El Ghaffar Ismail Farag, President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport, AASTMT, to support scientific cooperation with the League of Arab States and in implementation of the decisions of the Arab Summit—May 2024 session held in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain—and the resolutions of the General Assembly of AASTMT at the ministerial level during the November 2024 session, which support the Academy's participation in these important international events, and consistent with ongoing efforts to enhance international cooperation in addressing climate challenges:
Professor. Alaa Mahmoud Morsy, Dean of Port Training Institute and Maritime Research and Consultation Center, participated as a keynote speaker in the International Education Forum organized by the AASTMT on Monday, November 18, 2024, in collaboration with the League of Arab States. The forum was titled “Enhancing the Role of Educational Institutions in Addressing Climate Change: Prospects for International Cooperation to Achieve Sustainable Development” and was held at the League of Arab States pavilion in the Blue Zone as part of the Climate Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. The event was held under the patronage of His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, and His Excellency Professor Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar, President of AASTMT.
Professor. Alaa Morsy delivered a presentation titled:
“Recent Developments in Education and Scientific Research in Light of Climate: The Experience of AASTMT”
In his presentation, he discussed the role of education as one of the key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in addressing climate change, the main challenges facing education for sustainability, and the necessary components to confront these challenges. He highlighted AASTMT's experience in education and scientific research, showcasing achievements across the Academy's various entities to support sustainable development goals. This demonstrated the Academy's commitment to advancing the international sustainable development agenda and aligning its efforts, as the educational arm of the League of Arab States, with global initiatives to combat climate change.
The forum witnessed high-level participation from senior officials, experts, and specialists in education and environmental fields at both the Arab and international levels. The opening session featured a speech by His Excellency Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Mahmoud Fathallah, Director of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Meteorology at the League of Arab States. The sessions were moderated by Professor Mostafa Rasheed, Assistant to the President of AASTMT for Arab Affairs. International experts, including representatives from the Netherlands Maritime University Collage in Malaysia and the CEO of the Port of Valencia in Spain, also presented at the forum.
The presentations at the forum addressed the major challenges the world faces in light of climate change and the role of educational institutions in offering innovative and sustainable solutions to achieve SDGs while building the capacities of future generations.
The forum emphasized the critical role of educational institutions as incubators of scientific research and innovation in addressing global environmental issues.
