Program Description

The program objectives are to enable officers to assume responsibility for tasks delegated by the master related to ship safety, security of passengers, crew and cargo in accordance with conventions and flag state requirements. These include navigation, cargo operations, engineering and environmental protection. The course aims to enhance officers' knowledge of ship systems and instruments to enable effective decision making. It fosters a culture of safety through risk assessment and best practices while ensuring officers understand applicable maritime regulations. The main goal is to develop the skills for officers to effectively assist the master in managing all aspects of ship operations and fulfill their duties as chief mates.

Admission Requirements

Candidates applying to sit for Chief Mate certificate of competency examination shall meet the following requirements according to ministerial decree 221/2013: Beholding 2nd Mate certificate of competency. Meet the medical fitness requirements for the certificate. Have an approved seagoing service of not less than 18 months as an officer in charge of a navigation watch on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more on ocean-going voyages after the date of holding the 2nd Mate certificate of competency. Have completed the required upgrading training course in a recognized maritime institution. Have completed the required mandatory training courses in the recognized maritime institution in accordance to article 16 of the ministerial decree 221/2013. In case of completing the seagoing service on ships of less than 3000 gross tonnage, a tonnage limited certificate of competency will be issued after meeting the other requirements for certification. The tonnage limitation will only be removed after fulfilling seagoing service requirements on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more and passing an oral exam.

Tests & Prerequisites

Obtaining an approved seagoing service of not less than 18 months as an officer in charge of a navigation watch on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more on ocean-going voyages after the date of holding the 3rd Mate certificate of competency. Accomplishing the required upgrading training course in a recognized maritime institution.
