Chief Mate

Objectives

  • - Ability to calculate tidal condition, tidal stream, flow and simplified Harmonic Method.rn- Voyage planning and navigation in vessel traffic service (VTS), traffic separation schemes and areas of extensive tidal effects.rn- The trainee will possess a thorough understanding and capability in the subject of navigation to enable him to carry out passages independently in a proper and safe manner and to be able to solve those problems that may arise during a voyage.rn- The trainee will be able to use appropriate means of navigation in coastal waters, make use of publications, pilot book, charts and other publications to choose a safe and economic “best” route. rn- The course covers the theory and practice of navigation necessary for the effective and safe navigation of a ship in coastal waters and in the open seas.rn- Ability to use celestial bodies to determine the ship´s position rn- The trainee will be able to fix position and analyses in a practical way the quality of the fix, rn- Ability to determine the navigational errors in the celestial observation and solve the errors. rn- The course covers the theory and practice of navigation necessary for the effective and safe navigation of a ship in coastal waters and in the open seas.rn- Knowledge about tropical revolving storms and avoidance of storm centers and the dangerous quadrants. rn- The trainee will be able to fix position and analyses in a practical way the quality of the fix, do great-circle calculations and others methods. rn- Knowledge, understanding and proficiency of voyage planning and navigation for all conditions by acceptable methods of plotting ocean tracks, make use of publications, charts and other publications to choose a safe and economic “best” route. rn- Knowledge, understanding and proficiency of the nautical publication.
