Program Description

The introduced ETO program is intended to provide the trainees with approved in-service training, aiming at meeting the mandatory minimum requirements for knowledge, understanding, and proficiency of the STCW 78 as amended and flag state requirements. The program content is particularly meant to satisfy the specific requirements stated in STCW Code. Comprising a number of three functions at the operational level, the program will provide the trainees with sufficient competency required for carrying out technical officer duties both safely and efficiently. By the end of the introduced program, trainees will be fully aware of the operations related to the monitoring of electrical, electronic as well as the control systems. Further, participants will be familiar with the essential principles and techniques concerning the monitoring and operation of automatic control systems, auxiliary machinery as well as generators and distribution systems. In addition, trainees will acquire sufficient proficiency regarding the operation and maintenance of operators, distribution systems, and power systems exceeding 1,000 volts. Additionally, they will be provided with the intrinsic knowledge and practical expertise related to the operation of computers and computer networks onboard ships. Finally, they will acquire sufficient skills in utilizing internal communication systems both efficiently and effectively.

Admission Requirements

Requirements for Certification of Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW propulsion power or more on ocean going voyages: Be not less than 18 years of age. Have completed a secondary school “scientific department”, or an industrial secondary school in an appropriate specialization or any equivalent foreign education. Meet the medical fitness requirements for the certificate. Have completed the required mandatory training courses in the recognized maritime institution. Shall fulfill the requirements of one of the following streams: 1st stream: Have completed an engineering study programme of at least 4 years in the recognized maritime institution which includes workshop skills training and approved seagoing service not less than 12 months on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750kW or more on ocean going voyages, which meets the requirements of STCW Code and is documented in an approved training record book. The training and experience required shall be associated with the operation and maintenance of electric, electronic and control systems and involve the performance of duties carried out under the direct supervision of the chief engineer officer or a qualified engineer officer. The engineering study programme shall include the required upgrading training course and workshop skills training for not less than least 6 months (500 hours) in the recognized maritime institution and shall be documented in documentary evidence. 2nd stream: Holding a bachelor degree in engineering in appropriate specialization and approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750kW or more on ocean going voyages, which includes workshop skills training for at least 6 months, and have completed the required upgrading training course in the recognized maritime institution and shall be documented in documentary evidence. 3rd stream: Have completed an engineering study programme of at least 3 years in the recognized maritime institution, which includes workshop skills training and approved seagoing service of not less. than 12 months on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750kW or more on ocean going voyages. The training and experience required shall be associated with the operation and maintenance of electric, electronic and control systems and involve the performance of duties carried out under the direct supervision of the chief engineer officer or a qualified engineer officer, The engineering study programme shall include the required upgrading training course and workshop skills training for not less than least 6 months (500 hours) in the recognized maritime institution ,and have completed the required upgrading training course in the recognized maritime institution and shall be documented in documentary evidence. 4th stream: Have an approved seagoing service of not less than 36 months on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750kW or more on ocean going voyages in a capacity of electro- technical rating. The seagoing service shall contain not less than 30 months of approved seagoing service and workshop skills training for not less than least 6 months (500 hours), and have completed the required upgrading training course in the recognized maritime institution and shall be documented in documentary evidence.
