Through knowledge and understanding, students will be able to: • Locate the main sites of Graeco-Roman Egypt on a map • Single out the different traditions within Hellenistic and Roman art and architecture • Appreciate the Egyptian contribution to Greek and Roman art • Understand essays on art and architecture • Identify the main products of Graeco-Roman art in Egypt • Explain functionality and esthetic principles behind architectural products Through intellectual skills, students will be able to: • Analyze the different social, cultural and religious conditions in which Greek and Roman art developed • Compare different artistic traditions Through professional and practical skills, students will be able to: • Recognize features and describe pattern and materials • Read and interpret plan of buildings or settlements • Discuss literary, documentary and archaeological sources • Use the appropriate terminology

Egyptian Archaeology

Objectives

  • This course aims at introducing the students to the art and architecture of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods in Egypt, highlighting the difference between the two phases and the previous pharaonic period. It aims at refining the student’s ability to estimate, date and appreciate Greek and Roman art in a Hellenistic and global context, enabling to identify cross-Mediterranean, Asian and local traits. It also aims at underlining the contribution of Egypt to Greek and Roman art and architecture.
