Egyptian Archaeology

Objectives

  • This course aims at introducing the students to the reception of ancient Egypt in ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary Western societies and contemporary Egypt. In the first part of the course, the students will follow a chronological approach from Greek and Roman antiquity to the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the “rediscovery” of ancient Egypt at the beginning of the 19th century. In the second part of the course, the students will read excerpts, analyse images of objects, watches movies or parts of movies and study architectural buildings that were inspired by ancient Egypt, Egyptian museum collections and Egyptological publications/discoveries. At the end of the course the students will have a comprehensive panorama of so-called Egyptomania.
