Through knowledge and understanding, students will be able to: • List relevant historical sources • Summarize the cultural policy of the Ptolemaic dynasty and trace main developments; assess its legacy • Describe cultural differences between native, Greek, Judaic, and Near Eastern Cultures in Egypt in terms of religion, language, administration • Identify the peculiarities of Hellenistic Egypt • Identify the peculiarities of the Roman province of Egypt • Summarize the religious policy of Roman governors and trace main developments Through intellectual skills, students will be able to: • Compare with other Hellenistic kingdoms/Roman provinces • Contrast with previous Pharaonic/Ptolemaic regime • Assess effectiveness of political and economic reforms • Estimate the impact of Christianization and explain its consequences in terms of conflict and adaptation Through professional and practical skills, students will be able to: • Select, read, and discuss relevant literary, documentary and archaeological sources • Read historical maps, locate features, and name their characteristics

Egyptian Archaeology

Objectives

  • This course aims to present the general outlines of the history of Egypt during the Ptolemaic dynasty and the Roman occupation from the 4th century BCE to the 3rd century CE. It also aims at introducing the students to the sources used to reconstruct the political, economic and cultural features of the period and at discussing the characteristics, anomalies and peculiarities of Egypt during the Greek and Roman period through literary, documentary, and archaeological sources.
