Through knowledge and understanding, students will be able to: • Describe the techniques of mummification in different civilizations • Identify the materials and tools which are used in mummification in different civilizations • Appreciate the manifestations of deterioration to human and animal mummies • Specify methods of examinations and scientific analysis of human remains • Explain the different modern methods for restoration and conservation of mummies • Recognise the scientific methods of museum display and preventive conservation Through intellectual skills, students will be able to: • Compare between the components and properties of different human and animal remains ancient preservation materials • Extrapolate on the manifestations of deteriorations and interpretation of the mechanism occurrence • Discern what is fictional information and what is scientific information about mummification • Determine the most proper materials and methods for conservation and museums display of human and animal remains • Use proper material for the conservation of human and animal remains • Use library sources effectively Through professional and practical skills, students will be able to: • Apply the scientific method in restoration and conservation of mummies • Use the scientific methods in the museum display and preservation of mummies • Write well-researched contributions to the field of the preservation of human and animal remains • Give a 10-minute presentation on a topic of restoration and conservation of mummies • Observe and write down observations in a reflective journal. Material Culture Conservation

Objectives

  • This course introduces the student to the techniques of the conservation of the human and animal remains. The course includes a comprehensive study of the types of materials and tools which were used in ancient mummification in different civilizations and so students will identify the deterioration of mummies, un-mummified human and animal remains. Through this course, students will use modern scientific methods for conducting examinations and scientific analysis before they start the procedures of preservation, restoration, and conservation. The course includes preventive maintenance methods for human and animal remains, as well as identification of optimal conditions for preserving and remains in accordance with the preventive conservation requirements of museums and archaeological sites. Brief discussion on the ethical implications of the display of human remains will also take place in the diverse cultural contexts.
