Through knowledge and understanding, students will be able to: • Identify the waterlogged culture materials conservation • Recognise the manifestations of deterioration of waterlogged archaeological materials • Specify methods of examinations and scientific analysis of waterlogged archaeological materials conservation • Explain the different modern methods for restoration and conservation of the waterlogged archaeological materials conservation • Recognise the scientific methods of museum display and preventive conservation. Through intellectual skills, students will be able to: • Compare between the components and properties of waterlogged archaeological materials • Extrapolate on the manifestations of deteriorations and interpretation of the mechanism occurrence • Determine the most appropriate materials and methods for conservation waterlogged archaeological materials • Provide scientific opinion on the conservation waterlogged archaeological materials • Use library sources effectively Through professional and practical skills, students will be able to: • Apply scientific method in restoration and conservation of waterlogged archaeological materials • Use the scientific methods in the museum display and preserve of waterlogged archaeological materials • Write well-researched contributions to the conservation of underwater objects • Give a 10-minute presentation on a topic of conservation waterlogged archaeological materials • Observe and write down observations in a reflective journal. Material Culture Conservation

Objectives

  • This course provides students with a good knowledge on defining new interventional procedures concerning the conservation and restoration of underwater archaeological heritage. The course focuses on the characterization of the type of archaeological materials found underwater and on coastal sites. Attention is given to the levels of degradation and how this affects archaeological interpretation. The course discusses the different procedures of conserving underwater, to the conservation interventions needed for the lifting and recovery procedures of objects, stabilisation, conservation intervention and finally museum display or storage.
