Program

Material Culture Conservation

Objectives

  • This course introduces students to the history of mud brick techniques, tools, equipment, and materials. It provides a solid foundation on the history, types and construction procedure as well as soil and mineral analysis of the mudbricks. The course will focus on different methods of examination that is also linked to the archaeobotanic inspection of the mudbricks to identify the condition of their state. This type of analysis will be carried out in the light of figuring out the deterioration factors and extent of the damage and to put forward a proper conservation plan. The course provides the students with the various restoration and conservation methods used in the treatment of the mud brick, from the various stages of cleaning to the museum display or archaeological sites or storage.
