Material Culture Conservation

Objectives

  • This course introduces the student to ethnographic objects conservation. Ethnographic objects are artefacts which have been collected from indigenous communities around the world. They are made from both organic materials and inorganic substances. These might be local and traditional materials or may have been obtained through trade. The course includes causes damage and deterioration of ethnographic objects from environmental, physical, chemical, and biological effects. At the end of the course students will be able to document the object using photographs, descriptions, and diagrams to provide a record and keep track of its condition and changes over time. Students will study how to display ethnographic objects in museum and store house. Special reference will be given to the Nubian and Beshari ethnographic objects conservation.
