Objectives

  • This course introduces the student to the archaeological and conservation methods which are used in the technique of mummy portraits, icons and cartonnage. The course will discuss the types of materials and tools that were used in their industry. The course focuses on the techniques of manufacture and their factors of deterioration from a physical, chemical, and biological perspective. The course provides the student with the latest modern methods of examination and analysis to know the condition of archaeological material to be able to develop a plan of restoration and conservation, in the light of the requirements of preventive conservation. Finally, the course will provide students with the best conditions for the display of these objects in museums and storage in magazines.
