Through knowledge and understanding, students will be able to: • Recognize the salient phases of Classical history • Identify the different social, religious and political factors that played in the history of the Greek and Roman worlds • Appreciate language issues in Greek and Latin historiographical texts • Learn Classical historiographic and archaeological terminology Through intellectual skills, students will be able to: • Read and understand ancient sources • Use critical thinking to debunk ancient historiographical narratives • Comprehend historiographical essays on Classical Greece and Rome • Distinguish different historical interpretations, historiographic philosophies and schools of thought • Interpret archaeological finds Through professional and practical skills, students will be able to: • Write short essays on specific topics in Classical history • Carry out bibliographical research • Distinguish phases in Greek and Roman art and architecture • Read maps and plans of archaeological areas • Contextualize archaeological finds and connect written and archaeological sources Through general and transferable skills, students will be able to: • Discuss with instructor and peers different interpretation of ancient realities • Read and understand ancient texts in translation

Egyptian Archaeology

Objectives

  • This course aims at providing preliminary knowledge of the history of Greece and Rome in the Classical period, from the 8th century BCE to the 5th century AD. It also aims at providing information on the sources available for the reconstruction of the history of the period and on how to use them: historiographical texts, documents, archaeological reports. The course aims also at introducing the main themes and issues in a geographical and diachronic context.
