Objectives

  • This course deals with a multi-disciplinary approach for studying landscape archaeology. It is concerned with understanding human impacts on the geological and natural resources, topography, the ecosystem and the environment. It focuses on the physical manifestation of identity to comprehend the development of cultural landscapes. It studies coast sites, desert sites, plant exploitation, hunting, pastoralism, and farmed landscapes as well as urban and industrial areas. It focuses on how human cultures have interacted with natural environments and what archaeological evidence is present from this interaction. The course will include field walking, historic landscape analysis, and an outlook on historical geography. The archaeology of landscape analyses the symbolic significance of places, the ways humans have organized themselves in a geographical space, and the scientific analysis of environmental and climatic change.
