Description

The course focuses on the kinds and amounts of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fat, and proteins) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) that are needed to maintain optimal health and prevent chronic disease in adults. The course also covers healthy life-style measurement, Macronutrients and calculation of calories, Basal metabolic rate (BMR), Recommended daily allowance (RDA), Nutritional requirement for pediatrics and geriatrics, Clinical dietary care will be discussed. The course also covers intravenous fluid, total parental nutrition, as well as nutraceuticals (products derived from food source with certain health benefits), dietary supplements and herbal products and specific diets

Objectives

  • Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge By the end of the course the student should be able to: Recognize the difference between macronutrients and micronutrients Record the importance of therapeutic nutrition for athletes and chronic diseases patients Define Malnutrition and eating disorders along with their nutritional management. Correlate advantages of nutritional management with geriatric. Recognize the importance of clinical nutrition and most popular diets Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice Design suitable plan for feeding patients without complications Apply calculation of energy requirements using different methods. Prepare different nutrition regimen for cases. Domain (3): Pharmaceutical Care At the end of the course the student should be able to: 3.1 Gather and integrate information relevant to the applications of clinical nutrition. Domain (4): Personal Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 4.1 Demonstrate responsibility for team performance and peer evaluation of other team members, and express time management skills. 4.2 Retrieve and critically analyze information, identify and solve problems, and work autonomously and effectively in a team. 4.3 Use new technologies and media to demonstrate effective presentation skills. 4.4 Practice independent learning needed for continuous professional development.
