Pharmacology I (1 hr Lecture+1 hr Practical)

  • College of Pharmacy |

Description

This course deals with the characteristics and use of drugs intended for hepatic disorders including viral hepatitis, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcer, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome as well as gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. The mechanism of action of different agents commonly used for these disorders is provided. Interactive approaches are used to familiarize the students with background information underlying the expected side effects and the interactions between these agents and other drugs, foods, or disease conditions.

Program

Bachelor of Pharmacy - PharmD (Clinical Pharmacy)

Objectives

  • 1.1

Recognize the major drug groups used in the treatment of gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders.

    1.2

Explain the general and molecular mechanisms of action of drugs used in these disorders.

    1.3

Outline the general pharmacokinetic properties of these drugs and describe their uncommon adverse effects and idiosyncratic reactions.

    2.1

Apply safe and ethical procedures during in vitro pharmacological experiments.

    2.2

Handle biological tissues and pharmacological agents safely according to approved laboratory procedures.

    2.3

Follow appropriate procedures for the safe use and disposal of biological and pharmaceutical materials during practical activities.

    3.1

Relate the mechanisms of action and pharmacological properties of drugs to their therapeutic roles in gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders.

    3.2

Identify potential drug-drug and drug-food interactions in patient profiles.

    3.3

Apply pharmacological knowledge to resolve drug interactions and to prevent or manage potential adverse effects.

    4.1

Use appropriate drug-information databases and drug-interaction software.

    4.2

Provide relevant pharmacological information in a timely manner to support the resolution of drug-related problems.

    4.3

Apply critical-thinking skills to recognize potential drug-related problems.

    4.4

Practice independent and self-directed learning for continuous professional development.
