Description

The course introduces the modern concepts of medical immunology, with an emphasis on host parasite relationship, Non-specific and specific immunity, Mechanism of protective immunity. Molecular and cellular immunology, including antigen and antibody structure, function and reaction between them, effector mechanisms, complement, and cell mediated immunity. Active and passive immunization. Hypersensitivity and in vitro antigen antibody reactions, Immuno-deficiency disorders, Autoimmunity and auto-immune disease, organ transplantation.

Objectives

  • Domain (1): Fundamental knowledge By the end of the course the student should be able to: 1.1 Identify the key components of the human immune system. 1.2 Explain non-specific and specific immunity, mechanisms of protective immunity. 1.3 Outline active and passive immunization. 1.4 Identify various immune disorders including hypersensitivity reactions, cancer, immunodeficiency disorders, autoimmune diseases, and reactions to transplanted organs. Domain (2): Professional and Ethical Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 2.1 Conduct in the management of immunological disorders and organ transplantation. 2.2 Implement ethical and legal guidelines in immunological testing and treatments Domain (3): Pharmaceutical Care At the end of the course the student should be able to: 3.1 Apply the implications of immunology on patient care and treatment. 3.2 Implement immunological advances in patient care and disease prevention. 3.3 Apply immunological knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Domain (4): Personal Practice At the end of the course the student should be able to: 4.1 Retrieve and critically analyze information, identify and solve problems, and work autonomously and effectively in a team. 4.2 Demonstrate responsibility for team performance and peer evaluation of other team members, and express communication and time management skills. 4.3 Practice independent/self learning needed for continuous professional development.
