The energy sector is facing some profound changes due to factors such as climate change and environmental issues, changing patterns of viability in exploration and development, fragmentation of the value chain and the diversification of activities within organizations. This course aims to equip students with the skills required to support a range of management/professional careers in the global petroleum industry. It provides a comprehensive advanced level introduction to the international operation of the industry (upstream and downstream), and explores the key challenges and emerging technologies that are influencing exploration and production and the future of oil and gas.

Objectives

  • On completion of this course, students are expected to be able to: • Evaluate the primary uses of oil and gas and the significance of oil and gas within the global energy industry with the broad technical issues involved in the location and development of oil and gas reserves. • Identify the main concepts and issues underpinning the study of oil and gas management. • Develop a critical awareness of strategies, policies and processes for sustainable management of oil and gas. • Critically discuss the objectives and functions of and commercial relationships between companies and organizations in the upstream oil and gas supply chain. • Conceptualize and critically apprise the oil and gas sector’s changing nature and provide applied, industry-relevant solutions. • Critically analyse the broad principles and practical implementation of petroleum taxation regimes in various regions of the world. • Evaluate the risks associated with the upstream oil & gas industry across the life cycle of a development and/or life cycle of a basin. • Evaluate the Role of the oil and gas sector in economic development in the era of environmental protection. • Evaluate the current developments within the sector and beyond to understand ways in which technology, risk, and sustainability can be managed. • Demonstrate how to recognize and address ethical dilemmas surrounding corporate social responsibility, sustainability and transition in the oil and gas sector.
