AASTMT Carbon Footprint 2025

WHAT IS A CARBON FOOTPRINT?

The Invisible Mark
We Leave on Our Planet

Every action we take—from turning on a light bulb to driving to campus, from printing a document to powering our servers—leaves an invisible mark on the Earth. This mark is called a carbon footprint .
Simply put, your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (primarily carbon dioxide and methane) released into the atmosphere as a result of your daily activities. It is measured in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) and represents the environmental cost of how we live, work, learn, and move.
Think of it as the "weight" of your impact on climate change— the heavier it is, the harder we press on our planet's fragile ecosystems.

Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Climate Change: The Defining Challenge of Our Time

Climate change is not a distant threat
As the Arab region faces heightened vulnerability to climate-related risks, AASTMT recognizes its duty to act. We are not merely observers; we are agents of change.

Our Responsibility: Leading by Example

More Than Words—Tangible Action
At AASTMT we translate vision into measurable impact by embedding environmental responsibility, social accountability, and economic efficiency into everything we do.

Emissions by Scope

Looking at emissions by type rather than by campus, indirect Scope 3 sources, commuting, business travel, purchased goods, water and waste, make up nearly two-thirds of AASTMT's footprint.

01

Fuel burned on-site — stationary combustion, campus vehicle fleets, and fugitive refrigerant leaks. Abu Qir's large fleet is the leading contributor.

02

Purchased Energy — grid electricity for buildings, HVAC and equipment. Smart Village's reliance on outsourced cooling is the leading contributor.

03

Value Chain — commuting, air travel, purchased goods and services, water, and waste. The single largest category institution-wide.

AASTMT's Roadmap to Climate Action

Looking Ahead, Planned Actions

1. Expand Solar Power

• Run campus-specific PV feasibility studies at Abu Qir, Misr El-Gedida and Smart Village.
• Prioritize integration with existing grid infrastructure.

3. Cut Food and Waste Emissions

• Compost food scraps and recycle greywater for landscaping.
• Reduce food waste and phase out single-use plastics.

2. Green Our Commute

• Introduce electric or hybrid shuttle buses.

Ten Ways to Cut Our Carbon Footprint

Every Student and Staff Member

Every switch turned off, every ride shared, every habit changed — multiplied across four campuses, thousands of times a day. That's real impact. Here's where to start.

Walk or cycle to campus

when it's a practical option

Conserve water

and report leaks as soon as you spot them

Take AASTMT shuttle bus

or carpool instead of driving alone

Reduce food waste

in campus cafeterias and dining halls

Support composting and recycling points

as they're introduced on your campus

Turn off lights

and unplug electronics and equipment when not in use

Set HVAC to a moderate temperature

and keep doors closed while cooling is running

Print double-sided

or switch to digital documents where you can

Carry a reusable bottle

or container and skip single-use plastics

Get involved

join or start a sustainability initiative at your campus
