Knowledge and Understanding 1.1 Distinguish the different genres of script writing and thence their translation 1.2 Understand the different subtitling linguistic requirements and problems 1.3 Compare and contrast different language forms or dialects in a movie and its effect on translation 1.4 Distinguish the linguistic and cultural features of spoken discourse in ST and TT and their difference in both languages 1.5 Recognize text reduction strategies 2. Intellectual Skills 2.1 classify the subtitling parameters into technical parameters, linguistic parameters, and paralinguistic parameters. 2.2 analyze the role of camera movement, scene cuts & shot variations as unit of meaning making and their impact on subtitling and dubbing 2.3 apply the linguistic conventions in subtitling and dubbing 2.4 analyze subtitled texts to detect the translation strategies used in verbal and nonverbal signs 2.5 solve translation problems in accordance with filmic semantics & discuss possible errors 3. Professional and Practical skills 3.1 insert accurate punctuation marks into the subtitling lines 3.2 create linguistically appropriate subtitles for a given movie using appropriate reduction strategies. 3.3 provide accurate translation that enables lip synchronization in dubbing 3.4 apply house styles in AVT projects appropriately 4. Objectives

• This course is aims at introducing students into translating scripts, using the different script translation strategies with reference to the existing practices in the market. The course will cover the AVT strategies on the linguistic and cultural levels. Text reduction techniques such as condensation, transcription and transadaptation will be tackled. Students will also get acquainted with the influence of technological advances (subtitling software and the internet) on the screen translator’s practice.
