Program Description

Humanities department acts as a foundation for the students to get oriented with the different courses which will help them in choosing which department to join. They can either enroll in Language and Translation department or Media department with its different tracks. There are several job opportunities available for CLC graduates from both departments. The graduates will be well-prepared to work as translators, interpreters, journalists, content creators, photographers, TV presenters, graphic designers, cinematographers, producers and art directors in different organizations and agencies.

Learning Outcomes

Students enrolled in the Humanities Department are introduced to different skills throughout their first year of study. These basic courses lay a strong foundation on which students can begin to recognize their capabilities and talents. For instance, the Listening and Speaking course aids students in acquiring listening and note-taking skills, overcoming the trepidation of public speaking, and distinguishing relevant content in discourse. Students also develop their analytical and critical thinking skills in the Introduction to Literary Texts and Novel courses. Students learn the basics of academic writing in the Essay Writing course and are introduced to the branch of Phonetics, where they learn about the speech organs and the articulation of English sounds, in addition to, the phonetic transcription of English words. Students benefit a great deal from the Translation 1 course, as they learn about the different theories of translation and how to apply them in their translation of different texts in various fields. The college is also well-equipped with a photography studio, a multimedia studio and the plateau which facilitates the learning process especially in courses such as Introduction to Mass Communication and Introduction Radio and T.V., where students are introduced to several skills that include script writing, editing, and broadcasting. Students learn to use the latest software and programs, all of which encompass Adobe premiere and Adobe Photoshop. Students are also introduced to performative arts, both theoretically and practically, as the Theatre course discusses the anthology of drama, all while students get to experience performing plays on stage.

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements that must be met by all students wanting to join the College for undergraduate degree are: • Holder of High School Certificate or any equivalent. • Meeting the minimum score required to join the college which is announced before the beginning of each semester. • For Egyptian applicants, the student’s military conscription Status must be declared. • Sitting for the placement test is a must to enroll in all majors in the Arab Academy.

Tests & Prerequisites

Students applying to the College of Language and Communication are required to score at least 25 points on their English Placement Test. Otherwise, students scoring less than 25 will be enrolled in the ESP02 LH130 English course instead of the core Introduction to Literary Texts course.

Brief

The Humanities Department is one of the four CLC Departments. It is the one that offers the introductory courses to all CLC students in the first two terms of their academic life. These courses furnish the necessary base required for any student seeking to establish a career in the fields of media, and language and translation. Our courses enable students to determine their future academic steps..
