Description

Identify translation as a process. Outlining the basic features of different types of text. Relate the translation process to text types. Recognize different types of equivalence between the source and target languages. Describe concepts and terms appropriate to the study of translation. Distinguish between different types of text; Selecting the most appropriate translation method depending on the type of text; Identify the difference between source language/text and target language/text. Analyze a variety of translated texts; Comparing features of source language and target language. Translate guided texts against time pressure. Solve translation problems by applying acquired translation strategies Give oral presentations. Use the appropriate strategies to deal with the various non-equivalence problems on the word level. Differentiate between source and target texts in terms of lexical and syntactic features. Explain the role of translation in solving interlingual and intercultural communication problems. Justify the relationship between translation and other aspects of language use and communication, including the semiotics of verbal and non-verbal communication. Apply all the learnt strategies to the texts to be translated. Display knowledge of vocabulary and terms related to specialized fields.

Objectives

  • This course introduces the basic concepts of translation. It also introduces text types and relevant techniques of translation. It aims at training the students to translate a variety of text types, such as electoral speech, marketing campaigns, op-ed articles, brochures, leaflets, and printed advertisements from Arabic into English and vice versa. The course emphasizes a problem-solving approach, supported by text analysis (both in the pre-translation phase and in subsequent editing and evaluation).
