These efforts ensure systematic measurement and optimization of low-carbon energy, aligning with global climate goals and reinforcing the university's commitment to climate change mitigation and greenhouse gas reduction.

1. AASTMT Energy Research Unit Advances Low-Carbon Energy Tracking and Sustainable Campus Resilience

The AASTMT Energy Research Unit plays a pivotal role in driving emissions reductions and clean energy adoption through innovative monitoring and planning systems. Key initiatives include implementing a Power Station Monitoring System and online energy meters to track real-time consumption across the Abu-Qir campus. These systems have enabled targeted energy reduction plans for lighting, HVAC, and utilities, contributing to a 13.6% reduction in energy consumption at Alexandria campuses since 2018. The unit also spearheaded renewable energy deployment, such as the 150 kW photovoltaic (PV) plant at the Aswan campus, which supports AASTMT’s renewable energy goals.

2. AASTMT Climate Action Plan 2023-2024: Advancing Low-Carbon Energy Tracking and Management

The AASTMT Climate Action Plan 2023-2024 serves as a strategic framework for achieving carbon neutrality while supporting Egypt’s national energy goals. Key policies promote renewable energy adoption, aiming for 25% of energy needs to be sourced from renewables by 2025 and 40% by 2040. The plan also emphasizes energy efficiency, targeting a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 through measures like solar installations, smart energy systems, and sustainable transportation initiatives. By integrating sustainability into operations, research, and education, the Climate Action Plan demonstrates AASTMT’s leadership in climate resilience.

3. AASTMT Carbon Emissions Report 2022-2023: Tracking Energy Consumption and Carbon Reductions

The 2022-2023 AASTMT Carbon Emissions Report outlines a comprehensive reduction of 30% in total CO2 emissions since 2019, driven by initiatives across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Notably, Scope 3 emissions, which account for activities such as waste management and water usage, saw significant reductions. Programs like enhanced recycling, composting, and the reduction of paper consumption contributed to a decrease in Scope 3 emissions to 105,000,000 kg CO2-e in 2023, down from 110,000,000 kg CO2-e in 2022. These efforts align with AASTMT’s long-term goal of a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2040.
