Description

The human gastrointestinal tract is home to a complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome, which plays a fundamental role in human health and disease. This advanced course provides a comprehensive exploration of the gut microbiome, from its foundational biology to its profound implications for medicine and nutrition. Students will delve into the composition and function of the gut microbiota, its dynamic communication with the host immune and nervous systems, and its role in conditions ranging from metabolic and inflammatory diseases to mental health. The course will also critically assess the evidence for dietary, prebiotic, probiotic, and postbiotic interventions, equipping students with the skills to evaluate current research and future therapeutic applications.
